Ezen Foundation joins forces with the Museum of East Asian Art in Bath, to present an exhibition focusing on the icon of Japanese history and culture - the kimono. Showing the evolution of fashions and styles through time, it provides cultural insights into trends, modes of production, historical and cultural contexts.
This multi-media exhibition features antique woodblock prints, vintage posters, photographs, and is enriched by precious craft objects created to adorn the Japanese dress. Although often imagined as a costume frozen in time, the kimono is very much a living tradition that has responded to social and political changes throughout Japanese history. Recent revivals have shown it to be a dynamic and multifaceted garment that continues to nurture current fashions - as evidenced by cutting edge contemporary designs present in the exhibition.
